Bhubaneswar, December 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of discussions on national security and cybercrime challenges during the DG-IG Conference in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Sunday.

“Extensive deliberations took place on the second day of the DGP/IGP Conference in Bhubaneswar. Key topics included national security, urban policing, and emerging threats such as cybercrime and the misuse of AI,” PM Modi shared on X after addressing the 59th All India Conference of Directors General/Inspectors General of Police.

He emphasized the need for SMART policing, which integrates Artificial Intelligence and modernizes police forces to be future-ready. “I spoke about the importance of leveraging technology to make our forces more efficient and better prepared for future challenges,” the Prime Minister added on X.

PM Modi urged the police to focus on modernization and align with the vision of ‘Viksit Bharat,’ advocating for the use of technology to alleviate the workload on constables.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated: “In the valedictory session, PM Modi presented the President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau. In his closing address, he expressed satisfaction over the wide-ranging discussions on both national and international security challenges, as well as the counter-strategies that emerged.”

During his address, PM Modi also expressed concern about the increasing threats posed by digital fraud, cybercrimes, and AI technologies, particularly the potential impact of deepfakes on social and family dynamics. He urged the police leadership to view these challenges as opportunities, encouraging them to leverage India’s dual AI strengths—Artificial Intelligence and the aspirations of its people.

PM Modi further elaborated on SMART policing, urging law enforcement to be strategic, meticulous, adaptable, reliable, and transparent in their approach.

Discussions also covered emerging security issues along India’s borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar, trends in urban policing, and counter-strategies against harmful narratives. Additionally, a review was conducted on the implementation of new criminal laws, policing initiatives, best practices, and the security situation in India’s neighborhood. The Prime Minister provided key insights and laid out a roadmap for the future.

The DG-IG Conference, held in a hybrid format from November 29 to December 1, saw the participation of Home Minister Amit Shah, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, National Security Advisor, Union Ministers of State for Home, and Union Home Secretary. Over 750 officers from various states and union territories attended the event, both in person and virtually.
