Bengaluru, May 23: Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar conducted a city-wide inspection on Wednesday, gearing up for the impending monsoon season. Their visit aimed to assess preparations and direct authorities to implement preventive measures to mitigate potential risks.
Speaking to the press following the tour, Siddaramaiah highlighted the anticipated onset of monsoon rains, expected to commence in June. The decision to undertake the tour was prompted by forecasts predicting heavier rainfall, potentially leading to flooding. Authorities were instructed to expedite the filling of 5,500 potholes citywide, with an additional 557 potholes targeted on major thoroughfares within a month.
Siddaramaiah emphasized the accountability of engineers in ensuring minimal waterlogging and preventing water ingress into residential areas during the rainy season. Directives were also issued to clear stormwater drains and address encroachments along their paths.
Shivakumar emphasized the government's stance on encroachments, stating that no compensation would be provided to those encroaching on stormwater drains. He disclosed that Rs 1,800 crore had been allocated for clearing encroachments, constructing stormwater drains, and enhancing infrastructure in private layouts.
Responding to queries regarding alleged phone tapping, Siddaramaiah vehemently denied engaging in such practices throughout his political career. He attributed accusations to JD-S leader and former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy, suggesting they were diversionary tactics amidst a sex scandal involving party MP Prajwal Revanna.
In contrast, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka criticized the city tour as a mere photo opportunity for the Chief Minister and his deputy. He lamented the timing of the tour, deeming it belated and ineffective, advocating for proactive measures taken well in advance of the rainy season.
Ashoka's sentiments echo broader skepticism from the BJP, questioning the efficacy of the government's last-minute initiatives amidst concerns over monsoon preparedness.
