Justice Sanjiv Khanna has officially taken oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice DY Chandrachud. The oath ceremony was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna's tenure, although relatively short, will last until March 13, 2025.

Background and Career

Justice Khanna began his legal career in Delhi, enrolling as an advocate in 1983. He has an illustrious legal background, with his father Dev Raj Khanna being a judge of the Delhi High Court and his uncle Hans Raj Khanna being a senior Supreme Court judge who resigned during the Emergency.

Justice Khanna has extensive experience in constitutional law, taxation, arbitration, commercial law, and environmental law. He served as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005, becoming a permanent judge in 2006.

In January 2019, Justice Khanna was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. During his tenure, he has been part of several landmark rulings, including granting interim bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and emphasizing that delays in proceedings could be a valid ground for granting bail under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Justice Sanjiv Khanna's appointment as the Chief Justice of India marks a significant moment in the Indian judiciary. With a wealth of experience and a docket full of critical cases, his tenure, though brief, is expected to leave a lasting impact on the legal landscape of India.
