Bargarh, July 27: In a shocking incident, an ancient idol of Lord Jagannath was allegedly stolen from a chariot at Hatpada Rathapadia in Bargarh. The incident has triggered strong resentment among devotees and locals.

According to reports, the theft occurred after the conclusion of the famous Ekadashi Bahuda Yatra in Bargarh. The chariots had arrived at Hatpada Rathapadia for the Dwadashi Rath Melan, where they were kept as part of the traditional rituals. As per custom, the chariots are scheduled to return to their respective temples after the fair concludes on Trayodashi.

The chariots from Talipada Nrusingha Temple, Samalei Temple area, and College Road reached Hatpada on Saturday night. During preparations for the Rath Melan Yatra on Sunday, the absence of the ancient idol of Lord Jagannath kept beside the main deity on the College Road chariot was noticed.

Following the discovery, priests and servitors raised an alarm, bringing the matter to the attention of the public. Members of the College Road Radhakrishna Temple Committee later approached the police and lodged a complaint.

Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the area to trace the stolen idol and identify those responsible. Local police officials said efforts are underway to crack the case at the earliest.
