Why we celebrate

Nurses are the backbone of patient care. From hospitals to clinics, war zones to disaster relief camps, they stand on the front lines, often working long hours under immense pressure. Whether it's holding a patient’s hand during a difficult diagnosis or ensuring medication is administered correctly, their roles are as diverse as they are essential.

Theme for 2025

This year 2025, the International Nurses Day theme is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies”. This theme highlights how crucial it is to promote nurses' health and wellness.

The legacy of Florence Nightingale

Born on May 12, 1820, Florence Nightingale revolutionized nursing during the Crimean War by introducing hygiene practices that drastically reduced mortality rates. Her legacy lives on in every nurse who embraces science, compassion, and advocacy as pillars of care.

Minati Mishra, Nursing Superintendent at IMS & SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar, highlighted the vital role nurses play in modern healthcare, drawing inspiration from Florence Nightingale, widely revered as the Mother of Nursing and a trailblazer in professional nursing.

Mishra reflected on Nightingale’s enduring legacy, which is honored every year on International Nurses Day. Known for her tireless service during the Crimean War, Nightingale provided care to wounded British and Allied soldiers under harsh conditions. Her dedication and compassion earned her the title “The Lady with the Lamp”, a lasting symbol of selfless care and unwavering commitment.

Speaking on the 2025 Nurses Day theme — "Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies” — Mishra emphasized that the message serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role nurses play in healthcare systems around the world. It also calls for greater investment in their professional growth, recognizing that empowering nurses leads to stronger, more resilient health systems.

As the global healthcare landscape continues to evolve and confront new challenges, Mishra noted that Nightingale’s legacy remains a guiding light. Her reflections urge today’s nurses to uphold the spirit of compassionate care and embrace innovation, ensuring the profession continues to thrive and transform lives.
