New Delhi, Dec 10: Preparations for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, are in full swing as Indian Railways mobilizes to transport millions of devotees.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that over 13,000 trains will be deployed to accommodate the anticipated 20 million passengers traveling to key locations such as Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Ayodhya.
Of these, more than 3,000 special trains will be dedicated to handle the massive influx during the event.
To ensure smooth operations, Indian Railways has invested heavily in upgrading infrastructure, including a Rs 3,700 crore development in Prayagraj alone. The improvements include the construction of 23 new passenger holding areas, 48 upgraded platforms, and 21 new foot-over bridges (FOBs) to facilitate safer and more efficient movement of pilgrims. Additionally, 554 new ticket vending kiosks and counters have been installed to minimize wait times during peak hours.
In an effort to reduce congestion, four new ring rail services will operate between Prayagraj and Ayodhya, providing quicker travel options for pilgrims. These services are expected to ease pressure on regular train routes and make travel between the major Kumbh destinations more convenient.
Infrastructure projects are also underway to improve critical connectivity, including the construction of new bridges, including one over the Ganga River linking Jhusi with Prayagraj Junction. Moreover, key stations, like Jhusi, are being redeveloped to handle the large crowds expected during the Mela.
Indian Railways is also enhancing cleanliness, sanitation, and passenger services to ensure a comfortable experience for pilgrims, making the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela a smooth and memorable journey for millions.
