Bhubaneswar, September 9: In a deeply inspiring act of compassion, the family of a brain-stem-dead patient at SUM Ultimate Medicare came forward to donate the organs of the deceased, turning their moment of profound grief into an opportunity to extend the gift of life to others.
The patient, a teacher belonging to Dhansar village of Banki sub-division of Kataka district, was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition following a sudden medical emergency. Despite the dedicated efforts of the medical and critical care teams, ensuring all possible treatment and supportive measures, the patient’s condition continued to deteriorate. The patient was subsequently declared brain-stem-dead following completion of the prescribed medical assessment and certification process.
After detailed counseling and understanding the significance of organ donation, the patient’s family took the courageous decision to give consent for organ donation.
Following completion of all necessary medical and legal formalities, the organ retrieval procedure was carried out in the early hours of September 9. The liver and corneas were successfully retrieved for transplantation, offering hope and new life to recipients awaiting transplantation.
This marks the fifth case of multiple cadaveric organ retrieval undertaken at SUM Ultimate Medicare, reflecting the hospital’s continued commitment to deceased organ donation and its efforts to facilitate organ donation for patients in need of transplantation.
