PM Modi Begins Historic Seychelles Visit, Indian Ocean Security and Maritime Cooperation Take Center Stage

Strategic Indian Ocean Diplomatic Mission Begins

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left New Delhi on Saturday for a milestone two-day state visit to Victoria, Seychelles, where he will serve as the Guest of Honour for the island nation's National Day Golden Jubilee. This critical diplomatic mission marks the 50th anniversary of formal bilateral relations between the two democracies. Two Indian Navy ships alongside a defense forces contingent have arrived in the archipelago to participate in the national celebrations, emphasizing the deep defense coordination between the partners.

Vision MAHASAGAR and Maritime Security Priorities

High-level discussions between Prime Minister Modi and Seychelles President Dr. Patrick Herminie will focus on strengthening regional defense grids and securing crucial shipping lanes. This partnership remains central to New Delhi's proactive Vision MAHASAGAR framework, designed to ensure holistic security and growth for all nations across the Indian Ocean footprint.

Historically, India has acted as a primary security provider for Seychelles, supplying maritime patrol aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal radar systems to combat piracy and maritime trafficking.

Expanding Global South Cooperation

Modi is scheduled to create legislative history by becoming the first Indian premier to address the National Assembly of Seychelles. This address will focus on amplifying Global South cooperation, economic resilience, and climate action for island nations. The trip builds directly upon the foundational bilateral agreements established during President Herminie's official visit to India earlier this year in February 2026.
