India-Japan looking to deepen economic engagement, eye greater cooperation in chips, space: Suzuki

New Delhi, Oct 4: India and Japan are looking to expand their economic ties in high-tech areas such as semiconductors and space, Director of Institute of Geoeconomics Kazuto Suzuki said.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the 5thKautilya Economic Conclave, Suzuki said the economic partnership between the two countries is expanding across infrastructure and emerging technology sectors.

Suzuki said both the countries have been engaging in a lot of economic projects. He said the success of the Mumbai to Ahemadabad high speed train would be the “icebreaker between Japan and India.”

Talking about semiconductors, Suzuki pointed out Japanese companies are reaching out to Indian businesses, including Tata Semiconductor and Tata Electronics, as opportunities emerge in India's semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

“Japan is now reaching out to various economic entities in India, including Tata Semiconductor and Tata Electronics, to build a factory in the state of Gujarat, and it is very much an increasing opportunity for Japan and India to cooperate in the high-technology sector...”, ANI quoted Suzuki as saying.

Suzuki said space and automobile are among the many areas in which Japan and India are now working closely. He said both the countries are now working on satellite projects and co-operating on moon exploration. Speaking on the automobile sector he said hybrid vehicles could have an important role in India, especially because charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is still developing. Hybrid vehicles could help reduce carbon emissions in India over the next decade, Suzuki added.

Meanwhile, India-Japan bilateral trade stood at USD 27.47 billion in FY2025-26, according to government data. Japan exported goods worth USD 21.43 billion to India, while India's exports to Japan stood at USD 6.04 billion.
