Indian chess icon Viswanathan Anand assumes top FIDE leadership
Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand has officially assumed control as interim president of the International Chess Federation. This significant leadership change occurred on Friday. Current president Arkady Dvorkovich voluntarily suspended his duties after facing severe restrictive measures from the European Union.
For passionate chess fans across India, including the rapidly growing chess community in Odisha, seeing Anand guide the sport's highest office represents a proud global milestone. European authorities placed Dvorkovich on their 21st sanctions list due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Officials accused the Russian leader of using his international chess position to push political agendas. Before taking over global chess administration, Dvorkovich worked as Deputy Prime Minister of Russia.
Steering through uncertain times
Anand originally joined forces with the Russian administrator during the 2022 campaign to secure the deputy president role. He successfully claimed that position during the historic Chess Olympiad hosted in Chennai. Moving forward, Anand promised to ensure stability for players and federations worldwide. He announced on social media that maintaining smooth daily operations remains his top priority. Anand previously noted he will not run for the deputy position again during the upcoming September elections in Samarkand. He will, however, remain involved with the current campaign team.
Challenging international restrictions
Dvorkovich strongly criticized the European restrictions, calling them completely unfair and unlawful. He pledged to challenge the legal decision using every possible avenue. To shield the international chess organization from potential banking and operational freezes, he temporarily surrendered his executive powers. Meanwhile, Ukrainian sports officials celebrated the sanctions, arguing that Russian political figures should not govern international sports right now. Daily chess operations will now proceed strictly under Anand's experienced guidance.
