Bhubaneswar welcomes sixteen creators for new weeklong gallery showcase

Kalashaala recently launched Udbhav, an expansive group exhibition featuring sixteen independent creators at the Kalinga Art Gallery in Bhubaneswar. Running from August 4 to August 9, this week-long event highlights personal storytelling through various visual mediums. Bhubaneswar has long served as a cultural center for traditional crafts like Pattachitra, making it a fitting location to merge ancient techniques with experimental modern practices.

Bringing Creators Together

Curator Gracy Prakriti organised this unique collection to foster direct conversations between creators and audiences. The Sanskrit word Udbhav translates to a beginning, which perfectly captures the spirit of this creative event. The featured group includes Sushree Sahu, Kritika Gupta, Swastika Mahapatra, Sibarpita Mahapatra, Pooja Agarwal, Aparna Nandakumar, Sreshtha Roy, Sleepy Sethi, Priyadarshini, Arpana Srivastava, Prerna Tanti, Sritapa Mishra, Madhusmita Behera, Kalyani Kar, Srabani Bisoyi, and Satya Ojha.

Sixteen individuals from highly varied professions share their personal narratives on the gallery walls. Attendees will discover creative works by practicing lawyers, homemakers, researchers, human resource professionals, and independent designers. These participants explore themes of spirituality, culture, daily life, dreams, and mythology. They express their thoughts using watercolours, oils, charcoal, lithography, traditional Odisha Pattachitra, Lippan craft, and digital illustrations.

Prakriti explained that every piece starts as a simple feeling or memory before reaching the public space. She hopes attendees will meet the creators and learn about the unique beginnings behind each physical artwork.

Spotlighting Student Talent

Organizers also included a special section called White Whisperers. This dedicated segment highlights emerging talent from the Kalinga College of Art. Six students present their fresh perspectives through focused painting and printmaking. Etishree Dash, Prachi Pratyasha Swain, Omm Prakash Mohanty, and S. Siba display intricate watercolour pieces. Ranjit Mahanta showcases his lithography skills with his work Gajasardula, while Rudra Narayan Behera shares an untitled woodcut print.

Distinguished guests formally opened the doors on August 4 at the Odisha State Museum. Prominent sculptor and former Lalit Kala Akademi secretary Rabi Narayan Rath attended the ceremony. He was joined by painter Gajendra Kumar Padhi and retired IAS officer Chita Ranjan Mahanty.

These veteran figures shared valuable insights on maintaining discipline and preserving creative curiosity over time. They encouraged the participating creators to keep sharing their distinct voices with the broader community. The gallery remains open daily from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM for all local art enthusiasts.
