BCCI picks young Auqib Nabi over veteran Mohammed Shami

Jasprit Bumrah missing the upcoming Sri Lanka Test series due to another injury has forced a notable shift in India's fast-bowling lineup. Instead of recalling veteran Mohammed Shami, the BCCI selection committee decided to replace Bumrah with Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi. This decision highlights a tough reality for senior players trying to overcome extended fitness setbacks.

Indian cricket is currently operating under a strict transitional policy where high domestic workloads hold more value than previous international success. Managing fast bowler injuries has become a central focus for team management, especially considering the packed international schedule. Shami has not played a red-ball Test match for the national team since 2023. Furthermore, his most recent ODI and T20I appearances took place in 2025 against New Zealand and England, respectively. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated clearly that the experienced fast bowler currently lacks the physical conditioning needed to survive the exhausting demands of five-day cricket.

Stunning Domestic Records Overlooked

Despite these fitness doubts from the management, Shami put in incredible effort during recent domestic tournaments. Across seven Ranji Trophy matches, the veteran sent down exactly 1,383 deliveries and claimed 37 wickets at a brilliant average of 16.72. During this hard grind, he bowled 50 maiden overs and recorded three five-wicket hauls. He even registered his best-ever First-Class bowling figures by taking 8 wickets for just 90 runs. Unfortunately, these strong numbers did not change the minds of the selection committee.

Fresh Talent Secures National Call

Auqib Nabi ultimately won the selection race by completely dominating his domestic competitors. The young fast bowler grabbed an outstanding 60 wickets at an average of 12.56 during that same Ranji Trophy campaign. This exceptional form easily convinced selectors to hand him the vacant spot for the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka.

Going forward, uncapped fast bowlers are no longer just making up squad numbers. They are actively stealing starting positions by taking huge volumes of wickets in local competitions. If Shami intends to play Test cricket again, he must dominate younger rivals in upcoming events like the Duleep Trophy. Proving his complete physical fitness is now an absolute requirement, as past glory no longer guarantees an automatic return to the highest level of the sport.
