Educationist and former governor Dr DY Patil dies at 90

Dr Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, celebrated educationist and former governor of Bihar, Tripura, and West Bengal, passed away on Tuesday at age 90. Over five decades, he reshaped private education in Maharashtra by establishing a widespread network of schools, universities, and hospitals. His expansion of higher education campuses in the late 20th century perfectly aligned with India's growing demand for privatized professional training. This network eventually produced lakhs of engineers, doctors, dentists, and management professionals across the country.

From Kolhapur roots to expanding campuses

Born into an agricultural family on October 22, 1935, in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, Patil completed his early graduation at Rajaram College. He later earned a first-class law degree from Shivaji University. Although qualified to practice law, he shifted his focus entirely toward building educational access. During an era when professional training options were highly restricted, he set up numerous colleges offering degrees in medicine, engineering, nursing, agriculture, and architecture. Today, the DY Patil Group successfully operates over one hundred educational institutions and healthcare facilities in cities like Pune, Navi Mumbai, and Kolhapur.

Public service across three Indian states

Dr Patil seamlessly blended his passion for teaching with significant constitutional duties. He occupied the Raj Bhavan as the Governor of Tripura before taking charge in Bihar and eventually moving to West Bengal. During these gubernatorial terms, he consistently engaged with higher education boards to improve regional academic standards. India proudly awarded him the Padma Shri to honor his lifelong commitment to education and social upliftment. Beyond building academic colleges, he funded extensive healthcare centers and modern sports infrastructure. Generations of students quickly recognize his name on degree certificates and university gates. His passing closes a long chapter of dedicated public service, but the modern campuses he established will continue educating future Indian professionals for many years to come.
