Remembering Odisha Heritage
Renowned director Satyabrata Rout presents a striking new theatrical production celebrating a young freedom fighter. Titled "The Boatman Boy", this dramatic work draws direct inspiration from the legendary Odia poem "Baji Rout". Written by acclaimed literary figure Sachidananda Routray, the original verses capture an unforgettable moment in India's struggle for independence.
During the late 1930s, the Prajamandal Movement united peasants and workers against feudal oppression in the princely states. This local uprising ran parallel to Mahatma Gandhi’s larger national campaigns, proving that grassroots resistance thrived across rural eastern India. On October 10, 1938, a twelve-year-old boy named Baji Rout took a brave stand at the Brahmani River. He firmly refused to ferry British armed police across the water. Tragically, soldiers shot him dead for his defiant refusal. Sachidananda Routray later transformed this heartbreaking event into an immortal literary masterpiece. Routray eventually earned the prestigious Jnanpith Award in 1986 for his lifetime contributions to literature.
Breathing Life Into Poetry
