Indian Air Force executes historic high-altitude landing in Ladakh
Indian Air Force pilots have executed an unprecedented touchdown of an Ilyushin IL-76MD transport aircraft at the Nyoma runway in Ladakh. Situated at an elevation of 13,629 feet, this operation represents the highest-altitude landing ever completed by this specific Russian-origin plane globally. Positioned just 25 kilometers from the Line of Actual Control, this newly upgraded airstrip provides significant logistical leverage for rapid troop and supply mobilisation along the northern frontier.
Expanding strategic airlift capacity
Defence officials confirmed the milestone on social media, praising the flight crew for their precision and professionalism during the highly technical maneuver. Official statements highlighted this flight as a definitive demonstration of enduring aviation capabilities that reinforce national strategic airlift operations. Maintaining robust infrastructure in this sensitive border zone remains a high priority for national security planners responding to ongoing geopolitical shifts across the Himalayas. By demonstrating reliable heavy lift support, defense forces reduce their dependence on road networks that often remain blocked by heavy snowfall during harsh winter months.

High-altitude infrastructure development
Constructed with a budget of approximately Rs 214 crore following its formal sanction in 2021, the expansive three-kilometer stretch became fully operational late last year. This specific facility was engineered to handle heavy aircraft movement and support emergency military operations under extreme weather conditions. By proving the heavy-lift capacity at such formidable elevations, defence forces can now sustain year-round deployment of critical equipment to remote outposts efficiently.
