Ranchi, Aug 4: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren passed away today while undergoing treatment at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital at the age of 81 years.
As per reports, he had been undergoing treatment for over a month, with his condition remaining critical in recent days.
Taking to his official ‘X’ handle, son of the late leader and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced his father’s demise and wrote, “Beloved Dishom Guruji has left us. I have lost everything today.”
The hospital stated that Soren was admitted on June 19 and was under the care of Dr. A.K. Bhalla, Senior Consultant in Nephrology. Despite the best efforts of the multidisciplinary medical team, he passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, with his family by his side.
The hospital extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and the people of Jharkhand during this time of grief over the loss of a widely respected mass leader.
It is worth noting that over a political career spanning more than four decades, Soren was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and served two terms as a Rajya Sabha MP, with the second term ongoing.
Shibu Soren, a member of the Santhal community, was born in Ramgarh district, which was then part of Bihar. In 1972, he joined forces with Leftist trade union leader A.K. Roy and Kurmi Mahato leader Binod Bihari Mahato to establish the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Over time, Mr. Soren became a prominent leader of the statehood movement that ultimately resulted in the creation of Jharkhand in 2000.
He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from Dumka, which later became a stronghold of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). However, the veteran leader faced defeat in 2019 when BJP’s Nalin Soren won the seat by a margin of over 45,000 votes.
Soren served as a Union Minister and was Jharkhand’s Chief Minister three times, but he was unable to complete any of his terms. He first became Chief Minister in 2005 but resigned just nine days later after failing to prove majority in the Assembly floor test.
Two more brief stints as Chief Minister followed, each lasting only a few months due to the instability of coalition politics.
