Baripada, Sept 12: A female elephant was allegedly electrocuted to death at Jamasuli village under Betanoti Range in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Thursday.
According to the information, eleven wild elephants were roaming in the Bodampur section of the Betanati range when the female elephant became separated from the herd early this morning. Despite all-night patrols by the Betanati Forest Department, the female elephant tragically died after coming into contact with an electric wire laid to protect nearby paddy fields.
A large crowd gathered to see the carcass of the elephant which is still lying on the field of one Ram Hembram. The electric wire that caused the elephant's death was found entangled in its trunk.
Earlier on Tuesday, another female elephant aged around 12 years was electrocuted to death in Nuagaon village under Panposh Forest Range of Rourkela Forest Division after coming into contact with a live electric wire which was illegally connected to a brick clin.
Worth mentioning, Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia shared that, over the past decade, a total of 719 elephants have died from various causes, including 41 that were killed by hunters or wildlife smugglers.
