Bengaluru startup readies its affordable EL platform electric vehicle

Bengaluru-based electric two-wheeler manufacturer Ather Energy is preparing to introduce its highly anticipated mass market electric scooter on August 29, 2026, during the fourth Ather Community Day event. Co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta recently confirmed the launch date through his social media account, sharing a sneak peek image of the upcoming vehicle directly from the assembly line. This commuter-focused model will utilize the brand's completely new EL-01 modular platform, moving away from the aluminum-heavy structures seen in the performance-oriented 450 series.

India’s electric two-wheeler sector is currently experiencing intense market competition as established manufacturers pivot from premium performance models to high-volume, budget-friendly commuter options designed for everyday families.

Built For Everyday Commuters

Engineers designed the EL architecture primarily to reduce production costs and improve manufacturing scalability without sacrificing core vehicle quality. Ather plans to price this upcoming family vehicle aggressively, directly targeting the highly competitive Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.25 lakh segment. Unlike older premium models that relied heavily on lightweight polymer materials, this new iteration features robust metal body panels for enhanced durability.

Buyers will notice significant mechanical adjustments specifically tailored to maximize comfort over challenging city roads. The vehicle features a segment-first 14-inch front alloy wheel paired with a 12-inch rear wheel, offering much better stability than older setups. Suspension duties are handled by telescopic front forks and a single rear shock absorber mounted closer to the tail section. To boost daily practicality, engineers also included an integrated onboard charger, eliminating the common hassle of carrying heavy external charging equipment in the storage boot.

Expected Performance and Hardware

While official motor outputs remain closely guarded, industry reports suggest the flexible EL platform can easily accommodate battery packs ranging anywhere between 2 kWh and 5 kWh. This specific family-oriented model will likely carry a mid-sized battery unit, delivering an estimated riding range of 120 km to 160 km on a single charge. Top speeds should hover comfortably around the 70 to 80 kph mark, perfectly calibrated for safe urban commuting.

Technology continues to be a central focus for this upcoming rollout. Commuters can expect a vibrant 7-inch TFT touchscreen display running the latest AtherStack 7.0 software, complete with voice commands and connected features. Furthermore, it could become the manufacturer's first scooter to integrate an Advanced Electronic Braking System (AEBS), intelligently combining conventional stopping power with regenerative braking to maximize battery efficiency.
