In today's world, the importance of self-defense cannot be overstated, particularly for students. As they navigate through various environments, from school corridors to public spaces, having the skills and confidence to protect them is crucial. Self-defence not only equips individuals with the physical techniques to ward off potential threats but also instils a sense of empowerment and mental resilience.

Self-defense classes offer numerous benefits, especially for students. These classes teach valuable skills such as situational awareness, assertiveness, and practical techniques to defend against physical attacks. Besides, learning self-defense can boost self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and improve overall physical fitness.

Pratap Kumar Kar, Proprietor of Safe Self Defense Training for Women, emphasizes the critical importance of self-defense among girls and women. He believes that self-defense training empowers women by equipping them with the necessary skills to protect themselves in dangerous situations. According to Kar, such training not only enhances physical safety but also boosts confidence and mental resilience. He advocates for widespread self-defense education, noting that it is a powerful tool in combating violence and ensuring women's safety in various environments.

Dr. Hari Prasad Pattanayak, proprietor and self-defense coach of Utkal Karate School, shared his insights on the necessity of self-defense training. After an accident that resulted in a knee dislocation, Dr Pattanayak transitioned to coaching. Through his analysis and experience, he found that while karate includes defensive techniques, it may not be entirely effective in street attack scenarios. He stresses the importance of learning self-defense to protect oneself from unexpected attacks and situations. Dr Pattanayak has provided training in various schools and colleges, emphasizing that self-defense is essential for everyone.

"Learning self-defense has made me more confident and aware of my surroundings. It's not just about fighting back, but also about being prepared and staying safe," says Anjali Kumar, a high school student who recently completed a self-defense course.

One of the primary reasons self-defense is essential for students is the increasing reports of bullying and assault. These incidents can occur in various settings, and knowing how to defend one can make a significant difference. Self-defense training teaches students how to recognize potential dangers and respond effectively, which can prevent situations from escalating.

Moreover, self-defense classes emphasize the importance of using physical techniques as a last resort. They focus on de-escalation strategies, such as verbal communication and body language, to avoid confrontation. This holistic approach ensures that students are not only prepared to defend themselves physically but are also equipped with the skills to diffuse potentially dangerous situations peacefully.

Priyam Mishra, a college freshman who advocates for self-defense training on his campus said, “After taking self-defense classes, I feel more secure when I'm out with friends or even just walking home from school. It's given me a sense of control over my own safety.”

Educational institutions and community centers are increasingly recognizing the value of incorporating self-defense programs into their offerings. These programs can be tailored to suit different age groups and skill levels, ensuring that everyone can benefit from this essential training. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to support and enroll their children in self-defense classes to enhance their safety and well-being.

Self-defense is a vital skill that every student should learn. It not only provides practical tools for physical protection but also fosters a sense of confidence and empowerment. As students continue to face various challenges, having the ability to protect themselves and others becomes an invaluable asset.
