Angul, Oct 2: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan participated in a Pada Yatra in Angul district on Saturday. On the occasion, Pradhan offered floral tribute to the bust of Gandhi ji at the Bamur dak-bungalow, Angul. The Bamur dak-bungalow on the outskirts of Angul had the privilege to house Mahatma Gandhi for a night during his visit in 1934. “Out of the several visits of the Mahatma to the land of Lord Jagannath, his visit to Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bamur & Angul during May 1934 holds a special significance. It was also here that he undertook the ‘PatitaPabana Padayatra’ for eradicating untouchability from Odisha,” tweeted Pradhan. “Pujya Bapu’s role in galvanising the country, including Odisha towards the struggle for freedom is unparalleled. He not only fought imperialism, but also casteism, social and economic exploitation, untouchability and superstition,” he added.
