Bhubaneswar, October 12: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday said that the gang-rape of the Odia medical student in Durgapur is “despicable and painful” and urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure strictest punishment to the perpetrators of this horrific crime.

“The incident in Durgapur, West Bengal, involving a medical student from Odisha is despicable and painful. Have learnt that the survivor is receiving medical care. Pray for her earliest recovery. Such shameful incidents and crimes against women have no place in society,” Pradhan posted on “X’.

“Call upon CM @MamataOfficial Didi to ensure a fair probe, swift action and strictest punishment to the perpetrators of this horrific crime,” Pradhan wrote.

For the context, a second-year student of a private medical college was gangraped in Durgapur. The survivor is from Jaleswar of Balasore district of Odisha.

According to the survivor's father, she was taken by one of her classmates on the pretext of getting something to eat on Friday night, but when two or three other men arrived, he abandoned her and fled. They raped her.

Meanwhile, the father of the second-year MBBS student accused the West Bengal Government of slack response.

Odisha Chief Minister on Saturday also condemned the incident and assured that the Odisha Government will provide all assistance to the victim’s family and instructed senior officials to stay in contact with the West Bengal government and take necessary steps.

To provide all the necessary support, a team of district administration and police has reached Durgapur.

Meanwhile, three accused have been arrested by Police in connection with gang rape case, said Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate.
