βββββββChennai (Tamil Nadu), October 26: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday inspected Chembarambakkam Lake near Chennai to assess flood prevention measures and preparedness for heavy rainfall ahead of the northeast monsoon.
During the visit, the Chief Minister reviewed the lake’s water level, inflow, and arrangements made by officials to tackle heavy rainfall and prevent flooding. The lake’s water level stood at 14.76 feet against its full capacity of 24 feet, with a storage of 1.488 thousand million cubic feet.
Meanwhile, cyclone warning signals have been issued at nine ports, including Chennai, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore, following the formation of a depression over the Bay of Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast on October 28.
The IMD has forecast that the system may cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam around forenoon on October 28, with wind speeds of 115–125 kmph and gusts reaching 140 kmph.
Warning signals have also been hoisted at Karaikal, Pamban and Thoothukudi, among other ports, as authorities monitor the developing weather system.
Puducherry, Karaikal and adjoining districts of Tamil Nadu have been experiencing continuous rainfall since Saturday night. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of the region as the northeast monsoon remains active.
Authorities are closely monitoring reservoir levels and weather conditions to minimise the risk of flooding and ensure public safety.
