Bhubaneswar, October 6: In a bid to check circulation of communal, false, misleading and threatening content on social media platforms involving violence in Cuttack city, Odisha police on Monday issued a stern advisory urging responsible online behaviour.
Meanwhile, curfew has been imposed and internet suspended in Cuttack city amid fresh violence on Sunday, a day after eight people, including Cuttack DCP Rishikesh Khilari, were injured in a group clash during Durga idol immersion at Dargha Bazaar.
The development comes even as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi appealed for peace and calm while promising stringent action against those responsible for disrupting peace in Cuttack.
“Before posting any content and news on social media, verify its authenticity. Refrain from sharing false or provocative content. Strict legal action will be taken against those who spread or promote misinformation or misleading content,” said Odisha Police in its ‘X’ handle.
“Some individuals are creating and circulating fake news to disturb social harmony. Citizens are urged to stay alert and not believe in any fake videos or social media posts under any circumstances,” it warned.
Commissionerate police is conducting flag marches throughout the city to reassure citizens of their safety. Many senior police officials, including DGP Khurania, Commissioner of Police S Dev Datta Singh, and Additional Director General (Law & Order) Sanjay Kumar are camping in Cuttack to work out a strategy on restoring peace in Cuttack.
