Bengal wicketkeeper-batter arrested following serious allegations by medical student
Police officials have arrested Bengal cricketer Abishek Porel following a serious complaint filed by a medical student. Hooghly Rural police SP Kunwar Bhushan Singh confirmed that law enforcement detained the Delhi Capitals player from Emami City, located within the Dum Dum police station limits. This action comes after the Calcutta High Court recently directed local authorities to take him into custody regarding the ongoing case. Cases involving high-profile athletes often draw intense public scrutiny, highlighting the strict legal frameworks surrounding personal relationships and professional conduct in Indian sports.
Details of the serious police complaint
Back in June, the medical student officially registered a grievance with local authorities. She claimed that she and the left-handed top-order batter shared a relationship for three years. However, personal differences emerged last year, prompting him to slowly distance himself from her. According to her statement, they engaged in a physical relationship because he promised to marry her. She alleges he is now refusing to honour that commitment. Furthermore, her official complaint accuses him of assault and criminal intimidation. A police official stated that they received her detailed complaint and immediately launched a thorough investigation.
Porel’s Cricketing career and prior responses
Before this legal trouble escalated, the Porel firmly denied all these allegations. On the field, he has steadily built a solid professional reputation. He joined the Delhi Capitals franchise in 2023 for the Indian Premier League. During the previous season, he scored 108 runs across four innings for his team. Beyond his IPL appearances, he has also traveled with the India A squad for tours in the United Kingdom and Australia. He started his first-class career for Bengal during the 2021-22. Since then, he has participated in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games.
