Seoul, June 11: South Korea has witnessed a significant surge in the adoption of OpenAI's ChatGPT, with the number of users surpassing 1 million for the first time, according to industry data released on Tuesday.
The mobile ChatGPT application recorded a remarkable growth, reaching 1.27 million users in May, marking a 30 percent increase from the previous month's figure of 980,000, as reported by market data analysis firm IGAWorks, cited by Yonhap news agency.
This milestone marks the first time that ChatGPT's monthly user count has breached the 1 million mark in South Korea, showcasing the escalating popularity of the artificial intelligence chatbot in the country.
The user base has demonstrated consistent growth, ascending from 697,000 in February to 880,000 in March.
Moreover, the data illustrates a notable uptick in user engagement, with South Koreans collectively spending 739,000 hours interacting with ChatGPT last month, reflecting a substantial 55.8 percent increase from the 474,000 hours logged in April.
The surge in adoption is further evidenced by a surge in new downloads of the ChatGPT app, which skyrocketed by 47.9 percent month-on-month to reach 404,000 in May.
Available on both iOS and Android platforms since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT continues to attract a diverse user base, captivating audiences with its content-generating generative AI technology.
