New Delhi, May 5: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in collaboration with all States and Union Territories, launched Fire Safety Week from May 4 to 10, 2026, to reinforce fire safety in healthcare environments. The event, marked by a nationwide pledge ceremony, focused on the theme “Fire Safety in Health Facilities,” led by Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava.
Smt. Srivastava emphasized that fire safety is a collective responsibility, urging healthcare facilities to assess infrastructure, conduct fire safety audits, and upload details on the IHIP portal. She highlighted that over 50,000 participants had already completed the iGOT fire safety course, and efforts were underway to expand the initiative.
Shri Krishna S. Vatsa of NDMA stressed the importance of a proactive, systems-based approach to fire safety and the need for capacity-building programs. Shri Sunil Kumar Jha, Director General of Fire Services, underscored the critical need for strict safety norms and regular audits in hospitals to prevent fire-related incidents.
The Ministry also launched the National Guidelines on Fire and Life Safety in Healthcare Facilities (2026), developed through expert consultations. These guidelines focus on risk assessment, emergency response systems, and specialized safety protocols for high-risk areas like ICUs and OTs.
Throughout Fire Safety Week, activities such as fire safety audits, mock drills, and technical webinars will be held to raise awareness and preparedness across healthcare facilities.
