Bhubaneswar: Play ‘Daani’ highlights complexities of belief & superstition

Bhubaneswar, Sept 4: A powerful social message on the complexities of belief and superstition was brought to the stage with the play ‘Daani’ at Bhubaneswar’s Bhanja Kala Mandap.

The play, directed by Dr. Bijay Kumar Chaudhury, was presented by the Chamatkar Theatre Group from Nayagarh on Wednesday evening.

The play is rooted in the tribal traditions of Odisha and offers a vivid portrayal of the harsh realities of social stigmas, superstition, and blind beliefs, particularly in rural communities.

Based on a real-life incident that occurred two decades ago in the Sundargarh region, ‘Daani’ explores the theme of human suffering caused by age-old practices and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals under the guise of superstition.

In addition to its run in Bhubaneswar, ‘Daani’ has also been performed in various cities including Cuttack, Nayagarh, and Paradeep, receiving widespread appreciation.

The play’s script, penned by Vijay Kumar Mohanty, has resonated with many, and Dr. Chaudhury’s direction has been instrumental in bringing the sensitive subject matter to life.
