Bhubaneswar, August 28: The CCTV cameras of police which were earlier installed in the city are mostly lying defunct at present failing to check crime and track criminals.
The defunct CCTV cameras are also hampering automatic traffic management following which traffic violators give police the slip and snatching incidents are on the rise as police fail to track the miscreants movement after committing the crime.
According to the Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL), there are 1122 CCTV cameras installed in the city, including 902 pan-till-zoom (PTZ) cameras which could take picture by rotating 360 degree. These PTZ cameras have been installed at 242 sensitive points of the city identified by June 2024. The BSCL has targeted to install more PTZ cameras in coming days.
Similarly, 220 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed in the city on gantry poles at 32 traffic posts in the city to check traffic violators.
However, three ANPR cameras have been dislocated at AG Square and several PTZ cameras installed in Janpath, Cuttack Road, Nalco Square, Patia and Hansapal are lying defunct.
