Bhubaneswar, Sept 28: Odisha Chief Minister on Saturday asked the police to ensure the safety of women and to be extra sensitive when they are coming police stations to lodge complaints.

“Police officers must exercise extra patience and attentiveness when listening to women who come to to lodge complaints, especially during the night,” Majhi said addressing the concluding day of a two-day collectors-SPs conference.

Majhi noted the rate of conviction in crimes against women remained low over the last 22 years. Besides, cases of eve-teasing have increased in Odisha. The Police Department should ensure that girls, students and women can move freely across the state. Otherwise his government would not tolerate this, he added.

“I urge the DGP to provide district-wise data of cases against women, conviction pending status and other data within one week. A future roadmap will be prepared to address it after legal consultations,” he said.

The state government has zero tolerance towards crimes against women and children. Stern action would be taken even if influential people are found involved, Majhi said.
