Dhaka, Aug 5: In a dramatic turn of events, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her post, with the announcement of an interim government to run the country. The announcement was made by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Monday in a televised address to the nation.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman urged citizens to maintain their trust in the Bangladesh Army, assuring them that the defence forces will ensure peace and stability in the coming days. He also mentioned that he will soon be meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin to discuss the way forward.
The resignation follows reports of Hasina relocating to a "safer place" after hundreds of protestors stormed Gonobhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister in Dhaka. This move came after a day of violent clashes between police and protestors on Sunday, resulting in over 100 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries.
According to Bangladesh's leading daily, 'The Daily Star,' the death toll from anti-government protests has now exceeded 300 in the past three weeks, marking this as the bloodiest period in the history of Bangladesh's civil movements.
