Bahanaga train tragedy: CBI files charge-sheet against 3 arrested Railways officials

Bhubaneswar, Sept 2: The CBI has filed charge-sheet against the three Railways officials on Saturday who were arrested in connection with the Bahanaga tripple train accident.

The CBI team which was probing the fatal train accident submitted the charge-sheet in the Special CBI Court in the afternoon.

Earlier on July 14,three railway crews were arrested by the CBI in connection with the triple train tragedy took place at the Bahanaga Bazaar railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district. The trio was sent to judicial custody as their remand periods ended on Friday.

They were lodged in the Jharpada Jail in the afternoon following their interrogation was concluded.

The Bhubaneswar Special CBI Court had granted 5-day remand of the accused to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating into the case, on July 7. On July 11, the court had extended the remand for 4 more days on the request of the investigating agency.

With the remand of three accused, Senior Section Engineer (signal) Arun Kumar Mahanta, Section Engineer Mohammed Amir Khan and Technician Pappu Kumar ending today, they were sent to the Jharpada Jail where they will face the trial.

The three accused were arrested on July 7 and booked under IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence).

The inquiry report of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Eastern Circle stated that the accident took place due to lapses in the signaling circuit alteration at the North Signal Goomty (of the station).

On the evening of June 2, the Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary freight train at Bahanaga Bazar station and some of its derailed coaches colliding with Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express, leaving 293 dead.
