Bhubaneswar, July 21: Odisha has received 16% above-normal monsoon rainfall so far this year, creating highly favorable conditions for the ongoing Kharif season.

This was highlighted during a Crop Weather Watch Group Committee review meeting held at Krushi Bhavan under the chairmanship of Agriculture department Secretary Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee. The meeting was also attended by IMD Director Dr. Manorama Mohapatra.

The excess rainfall has been especially beneficial for water-intensive crops such as paddy, cotton, and potato, which rely heavily on consistent monsoon patterns. Officials noted that the timely and well-distributed rains have given a much-needed boost to agricultural activities across the state.

To support farmers in utilizing the favorable weather conditions, the Agriculture Department has been issuing real-time advisories based on forecasts and data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). These advisories are currently being delivered in Odia and Sambalpuri, with plans to expand the use of regional languages further, as emphasized by Agriculture Secretary D. Padhee.

Farmers can also access timely information and resolve their queries through the Krushi Samruddhi Helpline, ensuring continued support during this crucial cropping period.

In view of the promising rainfall, departmental officers have been directed to ensure the adequate supply of high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and other essential inputs. Dr. Padhee reiterated that all government support must directly benefit the farming community.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Agriculture Department, Horticulture Directorate, Water Resources Department, Cooperation Department, and the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT).
