New Delhi, July 29: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday released an informative booklet titled "Election to the Office of Vice-President of India, 2025", aimed at raising public awareness about the upcoming Vice Presidential election.
According to the ECI, the booklet presents key details of the election process in a simplified and accessible format. It also features concise summaries of all 16 previous Vice Presidential elections held between 1952 and 2022.
In an official statement, the ECI highlighted that under Article 68(2) of the Constitution, any vacancy in the Vice President’s office—whether due to death, resignation, removal, or other reasons—must be filled as promptly as possible. The newly elected Vice President will then serve a full five-year term, subject to the provisions of Article 67.
The Commission clarified that the Vice Presidential election is governed by The Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, along with the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.
Notably, the ECI pointed out that the Vice Presidential election differs significantly from general elections, particularly in terms of the electoral college, candidate eligibility, voting process, vote counting, and the legal framework involved.
