Kanakalata Sahoo, hailing from Kulashree village in Niali Block, Cuttack district, has become a beacon of selfless service in Odisha. Since her arrival in the village after her marriage in 1988, she noticed a distressing trend of high school dropout rates, particularly among girls, who seemed resigned to early marriages. Determined to make a difference, Kanakalata, armed with her diploma in dress designing, embarked on a mission to empower these young women economically.
Her efforts have borne fruit, as she has empowered over a thousand girls from the Scheduled Caste community by imparting vocational training skills such as badi and pickle making, as well as soft toy crafting. Her free tailoring training program has benefitted girls across six panchayats in Niali, enabling them to gain independence and self-sufficiency.
Kanakalata's dedication has earned her the endearing title of "Maa" among many residents, symbolizing her years of tireless devotion to making local girls self-reliant. Beyond vocational training, she also actively raises awareness about domestic violence and assists illiterate individuals in accessing government schemes meant for their welfare.
Recognized for her noble initiatives, Kanakalata has received numerous awards, cementing her status as a true champion of women's empowerment in her community.
Ankita Sahoo, affectionately known as the "Padwoman of Odisha," has been tirelessly advocating for menstrual hygiene across more than 700 villages and 100 schools for the past 12 years. As a documentary filmmaker and journalist, she has made it her mission to raise awareness and provide support to those in need. With a heart of gold, Ankita has distributed over 100,000 sanitary napkins to women who lack access to menstrual hygiene products.
Despite government initiatives in Odisha to provide free sanitary pads to rural women and girl students, many remain unaware of these programs. During her visits to villages like Koraput, Ankita was shocked to discover that the residents had no knowledge of sanitary pads whatsoever. In some instances, when she attempted to educate them on the importance of menstrual hygiene, she faced hostility from husbands and in-laws, who forcibly removed women from her presentations and hurled derogatory insults at her.
Ankita's dedication extends even to disaster relief efforts. She has bravely ventured into flood-affected villages, ensuring that women have access to the menstrual hygiene products they desperately need.
Through her unwavering commitment and compassionate actions, Ankita continues to make a profound difference in the lives of countless women, embodying the spirit of empowerment and advocacy in her community.
In 2007, Nibedita Lenka, a homemaker, stumbled upon a news report about a tragic gas cylinder explosion near her neighborhood. The blast had tragically claimed the lives of a couple, leaving behind their three orphaned children. Despite being strangers to her, Nibedita felt an inexplicable bond with the children and felt compelled to assist them.
Driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference, Nibedita, despite her limited resources, resolved to support the children in their education. She believed that providing them with an education would offer them a path to stability and a brighter future, far beyond just temporary financial assistance.
This significant event marked a pivotal turning point in Nibedita's life. Over the years, she has dedicated herself to aiding over 150 children, earning the endearing title of 'Mother' from those she has assisted. Today, many of these children have flourished and found success in various esteemed fields
Lenka, a compassionate individual, has initiated the establishment of the 'Yashoda Maa Foundation,' a philanthropic endeavor aimed at uplifting underprivileged communities. In Bhubaneswar, she has launched five "Barnbodha Pathashala" centers within slum areas, where she tirelessly provides moral education to children residing there.
