Berhampur, Oct 8: An undertrial prisoner from Phulbani Circle Jail has passed away while undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. The deceased, identified as Yashobanta Amat, was from Kelapada Panchayat in the Phiringia police station area of Kandhamal district.

Yashobanta, along with his wife, was arrested on September 5 in connection with a ganja (cannabis) trafficking case. After their arrest, the couple was presented in court, where their bail plea was rejected. They were then remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Phulbani District Jail.

As Yashobanta's health deteriorated, he was transferred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his condition while still under medical care.

In response to the incident, jail authorities have filed a complaint at Baidyanathpur Police Station in Brahmapur. A further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
