Nagapattinam, May 19: Following Vijay’s victory in the Tiruchirappalli East constituency and his subsequent swearing-in as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, TVK functionary Gerald Milton fulfilled a vow at the Velankanni Basilica on Tuesday.
Milton, who actively campaigned for Vijay during the Assembly elections, walked on his knees inside the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health as a gesture of gratitude. He later offered prayers for the continued success of the party in the upcoming Tiruchirappalli East by-election.
Milton had served as the election in-charge for Tiruchirappalli East and played a key role in Vijay’s campaign. Vijay secured wins in both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, eventually resigning from the Trichy East seat to retain Perambur. He was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, with the oath administered by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections marked a historic moment, as the state delivered an unprecedented mandate for Vijay. In its maiden political venture, TVK won 108 out of 234 seats, while both legacy Dravidian parties were ousted from power for the first time in the state’s history. Although Vijay’s party did not secure an outright majority, support from Congress (5), CPI-M (2), CPI (2), VCK (2), and IUML (2) — former allies of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance — enabled him to form the government.
On Sunday, CM Vijay chaired a high-level review meeting of the Energy Department to evaluate Tamil Nadu’s power infrastructure and financial health. During the session, he issued major directives for the renovation and modernization of ‘Amma Canteens’ across the state. Officials also reviewed power generation capacity, electricity demand, distribution networks, the financial status of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and its subsidiaries, and the progress of ongoing infrastructure projects.
