​​​​​​​New Delhi, July 28:The Supreme Court has barred the unauthorised extraction, editing, sharing, reposting, uploading and monetisation of audio and video recordings of judicial proceedings on social media and other digital platforms without prior approval from the concerned court registrars.

The interim order was passed by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana while hearing a public interest litigation seeking safeguards against the misuse of livestreamed court proceedings through selective clipping and commercial exploitation.

The Bench observed that the misuse of video clips from livestreamed hearings was "trivialising" the administration of justice and emphasised the need to prevent distortion of judicial proceedings.

At the same time, the court clarified that the restriction would not apply to fair and accurate news reporting of court proceedings. The Bench issued notice on the PIL and sought responses while considering measures to regulate the use of livestreamed court content.
