New Delhi/ Bhubaneswar, August 6: The Supreme Court has on Wednesday directed the Odisha government to investigate alleged illegal construction and tourism activities in and around the Satkosia Tiger Reserve.

Acting on a petition by advocate Gaurav Kumar Bansal, the court also issued notices to the Centre, the Central Empowered Committee, and other authorities.

The petition challenges provisional No Objection Certificates (NOCs) issued for infrastructure projects like hotels and a bridge over the Mahanadi River, claiming they violate environmental and wildlife protection laws. It alleges that local officials granted NOCs without proper authority or clearances from the Chief Wildlife Warden or the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

Spanning over 1,100 sq. km and home to endangered species like the Asian Elephant and Gharial, Satkosia is an ecologically sensitive area and a Ramsar site.

The plea also criticizes Odisha’s draft Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) plan for proposing “zero” buffer zones, violating NTCA norms.
