New Delhi, August 16: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking cancellation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's citizenship.
The petition Swamy has urged the court to direct the Union Government to cancel the Indian citizenship of Rahul Gandhi when the Congress leader has declared himself as a British citizen.
The controversy dates back to August 2019, when Swamy penned a letter to the Centre, accusing Gandhi of violating Article 9 of the Indian Constitution and the Indian Citizenship Act of 1955, which strictly prohibits Indian citizens from holding dual citizenship.
Gandhi's involvement with a UK-based company, Backops Limited, which was registered in 2003, his nationality was listed as British, Swamy alleged.
The plea seeks direction to furnish a status report on the complaint/representation filed by Swamy against Gandhi and decide it at the earliest.
