India Advances Air Combat Capability with 'Astra' Missile Test
India's self-reliance in critical defence technology has taken a significant leap forward following the successful test of the 'Astra' air-to-air missile. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) jointly conducted the trial from a Sukhoi-30 Mk-I fighter jet off the coast of Odisha, demonstrating a formidable enhancement to the nation's aerial combat systems.

The centerpiece of this achievement is the missile's indigenously developed Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, a crucial component responsible for detecting and locking onto enemy aircraft. During the test on July 11, 2025, two 'Astra' missiles were launched against high-speed aerial targets under diverse combat scenarios. Both missiles engaged and destroyed their objectives with exceptional precision, validating the seeker's performance and the weapon's reliability at a range exceeding 100 kilometers.
This successful trial showcases the power of domestic innovation, with the advanced guidance system resulting from a collaboration between multiple DRDO laboratories and over 50 industry partners. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the teams for the milestone, which reinforces India's position among nations with the capability to design and produce sophisticated air-to-air weaponry. The achievement marks a pivotal step toward greater strategic independence in national security.
