Bhubaneswar, September 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal within the next 12 hours, which is expected to strengthen into a depression by the evening of September 26. The IMD further forecasts that the depression may cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of September 27.
As the system develops, heavy rainfall is anticipated in several parts of south Odisha, with extremely heavy showers expected in the districts of Koraput and Malkangiri. Other areas in the region are also likely to experience heavy downpours.
In light of the weather alert, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu held a video conference today with the collectors of 18 districts—Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Nuapada—to assess the state's preparedness.
The meeting was attended by key officials, including the Chief Engineer of the Water Resources Department, the IMD Director, the Executive Director of OSDMA, and senior personnel from the SRC office.
Collectors from the most vulnerable districts, especially Koraput and Malkangiri, have been instructed to remain vigilant. Fire Services and ODRAF teams have been mobilized where needed, and drainage engineers, along with field staff, have been directed to keep resources on standby to manage potential flooding.
"The administration is fully prepared, and the state government is continuously monitoring the situation. We urge people not to panic or fall prey to rumors," officials emphasized.
