Serum Institute teams up with Meiji Seika Pharma produce crucial brain vaccine

Pune-based Serum Institute of India has secured a crucial technology transfer agreement with Japan’s Meiji Seika Pharma to domestically develop and manufacture Japanese Encephalitis vaccine. This new collaboration aims to stabilise critical supply chains for India's ongoing national immunisation program. Following the successful completion of initial compliance milestones, Serum Institute will immediately begin local development activities using proven formulas currently produced by KM Biologics.

Tackling High Regional Mortality Rates

Japanese encephalitis remains a severe public health threat across the Asia-Pacific region, particularly targeting young children under 15 years old. Public health data indicates the mosquito-borne viral infection triggers approximately 100,000 clinical cases annually worldwide. Out of those documented cases, nearly 25,000 result in death, reflecting a highly concerning fatality rate that regularly reaches up to 30 percent. Furthermore, between 30 and 50 percent of all survivors suffer from permanent long-term neurological complications. This heavy disease burden drives a constant, urgent demand for reliable, large-scale medical countermeasures across vulnerable demographic areas.
