Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Mohan Bhagwat recently urged overseas Indians to prioritize complete loyalty to their current country of residence rather than their birthplace. Speaking directly to attendees at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday, he emphasized that individuals living and earning in America must conduct themselves as true Americans. This public address took place during the Universal Oneness Celebration. The gathering serves as a prominent stop on his current three-nation global outreach tour, which marks the upcoming centenary year of the organization.

Balancing Duties and Emotional Ties

Bhagwat drew a clear distinction between the land of action, or karma bhumi, and the birthplace, commonly known as janma bhumi. He told the gathered crowd that citizens must first complete all responsibilities owed to the nation where they currently build their lives. Contributing resources or time back to India remains a personal option for those who feel a strong urge to help. However, he stated clearly that such actions are never obligatory. Working professionals thriving in foreign lands must direct their primary dedication to their host nations.

Carrying Core Cultural Values Forward

Overseas residents still hold a separate responsibility to preserve their foundational cultural teachings. Bhagwat explained that the motherland expects its diaspora to practice harmony and peaceful coexistence wherever they settle. He pointed out that unity in diversity remains deeply embedded within the cultural DNA of India. True connection to native roots comes from treating all humans and the natural environment with equal respect, rather than simply looking backward. By constantly promoting these daily ideals, overseas communities can successfully demonstrate to global societies that highly diverse groups can live together peacefully.
