Churachandpur, September 13: In a heartfelt appeal to various groups to abandon violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Manipur, vowing to transform the state into a beacon of peace and prosperity.
During his first visit to the state since the outbreak of ethnic violence in May 2023, Modi addressed a gathering in Churachandpur, a district predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community. He emphasized that the central government's sustained efforts towards peace had initiated dialogues between the conflicting sides.
"It is deeply unfortunate that violence marred this beautiful land. Today, I assure you, the Government of India stands firmly with you, and I, personally, stand with you," Modi stated.
He urged all groups and organizations in the state to embrace peace, adding, "Choosing the path of peace is crucial for the progress of Manipur."
The Prime Minister stressed that peace is the cornerstone of development, and the Centre remains committed to achieving it for the people of the state. He highlighted the government's substantial investments in infrastructure, particularly in railway and road connectivity, which have seen increased allocations in recent budgets.
"Since 2014, I've placed special focus on enhancing connectivity in Manipur," Modi said. "As India strives to become the world's third-largest economy, it is imperative that the benefits of development reach every corner of the nation."
Modi also praised Manipur as a land of courage and resilience, sharing his personal experience of the warm reception he received on his journey from Imphal to Churachandpur.
"I met with displaced families, and I am confident that Manipur is on the verge of a new dawn. The people have chosen peace," he remarked.
Highlighting the significance of the projects he launched during his visit, the Prime Minister mentioned the Rs 7,300 crore worth of initiatives aimed at enhancing the state's infrastructure and healthcare systems. He particularly noted the positive impact these developments will have on tribal communities residing in the hilly regions of Manipur.
"These projects will play a vital role in improving the quality of life for the people of Manipur, especially for those in the Hills," Modi concluded.
