New Delhi, May 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, BJP National President JP Nadda along with others paid tributes to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar popularly known as ‘Veer Savarkar’ on his birth anniversary.
PM Modi called him the true son of Mother India and said the nation can never forget the tale of his unwavering courage and struggle in the freedom movement.
Taking to his official ‘X’ handle, PM Modi wrote, “A heartfelt tribute to the true son of Mother India, Veer Savarkar, on his birth anniversary. Not even the harshest tortures under foreign rule could shake his devotion to the motherland. The nation can never forget the tale of his unwavering courage and struggle in the freedom movement. His sacrifice and dedication to the country will continue to guide the path towards building a developed India.”
Similarly, HM Shah said Veer Savarkar surpassed all limits of courage and patience for the independence of the motherland.
“Swatantryaveer Savarkar ji, who crossed the pinnacle of courage and restraint for the freedom of the motherland, made an unforgettable contribution in making national interest an all-India consciousness. Savarkar ji, who made the freedom struggle of 1857 historic with his writings, could not be shaken by the harsh tortures of the British for his loyalty and dedication towards the motherland,” wrote Shah in a post on ‘X’.
“On his birth anniversary, a grateful nation pays tribute to Veer Savarkar ji, who dedicated his whole life to freeing the Indian society from the scourge of untouchability and binding it in a strong thread of unity,” he added.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also paid tributes to Veer Savarkar and wrote, “Pay tribute to the great freedom fighter Veer Savarkar on his Jayanti. His legacy of courage, patriotism, and commitment to the nation will motivate generations to come,” on ‘X’.
BJP National President JP Nadda also paid heartfelt tributes and wrote, “I pay my heartfelt tributes to the great son of Mother India, true patriot and great thinker Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar on his birth anniversary.”
“Veer Savarkar was a strong guard of India's independence and national renaissance. Despite suffering the cruel tortures of Kalapani, he continued to struggle for the independence of the nation with unwavering determination. Even the unbearable torture of the British rule could not shake his resolve to liberate the country. His immortal sacrifice and struggle-filled life philosophy will continue to inspire every patriot for ages,” he added.
Notably, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, widely known as Veer Savarkar, was born on May 28, 1883, in Nashik. He was a freedom fighter, politician, lawyer, and writer, and is best known for coining the term 'Hindutva'.
Savarkar was an important leader in the 'Hindu Mahasabha'. He became involved in the freedom movement while still in high school and continued his efforts while studying at Fergusson College in Pune. He was deeply influenced by the nationalist leader, Lokmanya Tilak.
While studying law in the United Kingdom, Savarkar joined groups like India House and the Free India Society. He also wrote books promoting revolutionary ideas to achieve full independence for India.
One of his books, 'The Indian War of Independence', which was about the 1857 'Sepoy Mutiny' or the First War of Independence, was banned by the British authorities.
