New Delhi, Sep 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday cast his vote in the Vice-Presidential election at the New Parliament Building in New Delhi.
Shortly after exercising his franchise, PM Modi took to his official ‘X’ handle and posted, "Voted in the 2025 Vice Presidential election."
Other parliamentarians from both the NDA and the INDIA bloc were also casting their votes.
The election will see a contest between the NDA nominee, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, and the INDIA bloc candidate, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy.
All parliamentarians were provided with the same type of pen to ensure privacy while casting their votes.
Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, who is currently serving as a Rajya Sabha member, arrived in a wheelchair to cast his vote.
Voting will take place from 10 AM to 5 PM at the New Parliament Building in New Delhi. The counting of votes will begin after 6 PM, with the results anticipated to be announced later in the evening.
This election carries considerable political significance, as the Vice President of India also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, a role that is pivotal to the smooth functioning of Parliament.
Notably, the Electoral College for the Vice Presidential election consists of 781 members, including 542 elected members of the Lok Sabha and 239 members of the Rajya Sabha (233 elected and 12 nominated, with six vacancies across both Houses).
All votes hold equal value, and the voting process is conducted through a secret ballot, following established parliamentary procedure. A majority of 391 votes is required to win.
Political observers anticipate a closely watched contest, although the NDA is considered to have a numerical edge in the combined strength of both Houses. However, all attention is on the possibility of cross-voting and the final outcome later this evening.
