Bhubaneswar, Sept 24: The five orangutan cubs rescued from Balasore and brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park are gradually becoming more active, with their overall health condition showing improvement. The cubs are eating and drinking normally, according to zoo authorities.
However, one of the cubs has developed anaemia and is being kept under closer observation. Authorities said its health is being monitored carefully.
The five orangutan cubs were rescued from Balasore on the night of September 8 and subsequently brought to Nandankanan. They have been kept in the quarantine facility of the zoo’s Infant Care Centre.
A technical committee constituted by the PCCF examined the health of the cubs and provided recommendations for their care. Based on the committee’s advice, veterinary doctors are continuing their treatment and monitoring.
The cubs are being provided with necessary food at regular intervals. The quantity of milk powder has also been increased, while boiled carrots and beans are being included in their diet.
The cubs have now completed 16 days in quarantine. They are reportedly becoming increasingly active and have started playing and moving around normally.
As per quarantine protocols, the cubs will remain in isolation for another 14 days. Their future housing arrangements at Nandankanan will be decided after the quarantine period is completed.
