SePhulbani, May 30: A local court in Phulbani on Thursday sentenced a 60-year-old man to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for carrying out a brutal acid attack on two individuals, including a father and son. The verdict was delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Pritish Kumar Rautray, who also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict. In the event of non-payment, the convict will have to undergo an additional six months of imprisonment.
The accused, Pramod Kumar Sahu, a resident of Patabali Sahi under the jurisdiction of the Town Police Station, was found guilty of attacking Suraj Kumar Mohanty and his father, Krushnachandra Mohanty, with acid on December 28, 2023. The incident occurred near Shashi Paan Shop Chhak, where Suraj was standing when Pramod allegedly threw acid on him. As Krushnachandra rushed to the scene after hearing of the attack, he too was targeted by the accused.
Both victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital by local residents. Police arrested Pramod shortly after the incident and registered the case under Town Police Station case number 329/23.
The judgment was based on the testimonies of 17 witnesses, including several eyewitnesses. The prosecution was led by Additional Public Prosecutor Shibaprasad Tripathy.
