Kolkata (West Bengal), July 20: Four individuals linked to the sensational Patna Paras Hospital firing case were produced before the Alipore Court in Kolkata on Saturday evening.
The shooting, which took place on Thursday, targeted undertrial prisoner Chandan Mishra—who was admitted to Paras Hospital in Patna for treatment—when unidentified gunmen entered the facility and opened fire on him.
Acting swiftly, Bihar Police, in coordination with Kolkata Police and the Kolkata Special Task Force (STF), apprehended the prime accused, Taushif alias Badshah, from Kolkata. Along with him, three others—Nishu Khan and two additional suspects—were also detained.
Speaking to the media while being taken to court, accused Nishu Khan said,
“I did not know of any murder conspiracy. I came to Kolkata with my girlfriend for spinal surgery. I was shot in 2023 during a land dispute and have been bedridden since. Taushif is my brother. He told me Sheru instructed him to shoot Chandan. I don’t know why he did it. After the incident, he came to me—I didn’t know how to react. Later, STF raided the place I was staying and arrested me, along with my caretaker, nursing staff, and eventually my girlfriend too.”
According to Bihar Police, preliminary investigations suggest that the murder plot was hatched at Nishu Khan’s residence. Taushif, they claim, executed the shooting. “Interrogations of other suspects are ongoing. All arrested individuals are being taken to Patna for further legal procedures,” the police said in a statement. They also acknowledged the critical role played by the Kolkata Police and STF in the operation, noting that a dedicated team was actively assisting the Bihar Police throughout.
Chandan Mishra, the target of the attack, is a known criminal with multiple murder cases registered against him. He had been granted parole on medical grounds and was receiving treatment at Paras Hospital when the attack occurred.
Commenting on the incident, Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikay Sharma confirmed that the assault was likely orchestrated by a rival gang.
Reacting sharply to the lapse in security, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav lashed out at the Bihar government, questioning the state’s law and order.
