Met Department Issues Severe Weather Warning for Odisha Coastal Belt and Inland Districts

Significant rain and gusty winds dominates Odisha landscape

Odisha residents can expect a brief respite from the summer heat as widespread rainfall and squally winds continue to sweep across the state. Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar reports that while moisture-heavy winds are providing immediate cooling, this trend is temporary. Data from the last 24 hours shows that Ganjam’s Sheragada received a staggering 105.0 mm of rainfall, while Atabira in Bargarh recorded 75.0 mm. Mayurbhanj also experienced significant activity, with multiple stations like Sukruli and Raruana logging over 45 mm of precipitation.

Marine Warning and Wind Alerts

Authorities have issued a stern warning for the coastal belt. Squally weather with wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph, and gusts up to 80 kmph, is highly likely to prevail along the Odisha coast today. Sea conditions remain rough to very rough, prompting an official advisory for fishermen to avoid venturing into the deep sea. Historically, April in Odisha serves as a transition period where Nor'wester (Kalbaishakhi) activities frequently collide with rising inland temperatures, creating these sudden, intense atmospheric shifts.

Seven Day Rainfall Outlook

Forecast models indicate that the state will experience light to moderate rainfall from Day 1 through Day 4. Currently, northern and interior districts are seeing scattered to fairly widespread activity. However, a significant shift in the atmospheric pattern is expected from Day 5 onwards. Between Day 5 and Day 7, the skies will clear, and dry weather will return to all districts, marking the end of this wet spell.

Impending Heatwave Shift

While current temperatures remain manageable - with Boudh recording the state high of 38.3°C - the relief will be short-lived. Bhubaneswar was reeling at 34.8°C and Cuttack at 33.4°C with minimum temperature was in Rayagada with 18.0°C The IMD predicts no large change in maximum temperatures for the next 72 hours. However, once the rain clouds disperse after the third day, a gradual and sharp rise of 4-6°C is anticipated across the state. This will likely push mercury levels well above the 40°C mark in western and interior Odisha, signaling the arrival of a more intense summer phase.
